Hypercholesterolemia or high cholesterol is a complication that involves a high quantity of fatty substances called Cholesterol that gets clogged up in the artery walls. This impedes proper circulation of blood and needed nutrients leading to poor circulation. Blockages in the arteries pose a risk on the heart leading to heart attacks and various heart diseases.

To avoid such complication, one should keep their cholesterol level at bay for a long, healthy life. To lower the level of cholesterol, especially of Low density cholesterol or LDL, otherwise known as bad cholesterol, there is a need to lead a healthy lifestyle routine. Among these routines are the following:

• More intake of food with low cholesterol levels. These types of food include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and many other natural foods. These must be a part of one's daily diet.
• Minimize intake of food with high amount of fat. Commonly included in this category are meat, oil, full cream dairy products and egg yolks. Instead of this food, better opt for fish, fat-free dairy products and egg whites.
• Drink 8 or more glasses of water, along with various fruit juices to facilitate proper circulation and digestion.
• Increase the amount of fiber rich food in your daily diet.
• Increase the amount of cholesterol controlling food like:

Garlic - this is useful for the fat produced in the liver. One or two garlic cloves per day can be helpful. However, be sure to brush your teeth after taking it as it can cause a not so good odor in your mouth.

Whole grains and oats - the fiber from this food can help remove the clogged up fat in the artery walls.

Fish oil - noted for their high omega 3 fatty acids, fish oil can greatly lower cholesterol level in the blood as shown in various studies and research.

Yogurt - it may be a dairy product as well but the amount of probiotics like Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Lactobacillus Reuter can lower cholesterol level by preventing the re-absorption of cholesterol in the body.

Grapes - this is known to have compounds that can lower cholesterol level. Grape juice or grape fruit itself can be taken. At least one and a half cup of grape fruit taken per day can lower cholesterol by 7% within two months.

Beans - there are different types of beans that you can include in your diet such as legumes, soybeans, navy beans, lima beans, kidney beans and many other types. Beans are known to have pectin and other high fiber content which can lower general cholesterol level.

• Include exercise in your daily routine. Exercise is proven to lower triglycerides which can clog up your arteries and to raise High Density Cholesterol or HDL, otherwise known as good cholesterol. A variety of exercises can be of big help to lower bad cholesterol levels and keep the body health as well. One can opt for strength training for the muscles along with other stretching exercises. Aerobic activities like running and brisk walking along with swimming and Yoga have been proven to raise good cholesterol level.
