How to Lower Cholesterol Level- High Cholesterol Problem in Children

The fact today is that we are seeing a rising cases of children with high cholesterol or heart diseases. Many of these children falls into the high risk group of having high cholesterol and we are seeing more of these in their earlier age then before experienced. Health care givers, in general, do not check for children's cholesterol regularly.

Cholesterol build up in the arteries can lead to either heart attack, stroke or both, depending on where the arteries are in the body. The American Heart Association states that there is research finding to support cholesterol buildup starts in early childhood.

Childhood is in most physicians' minds, the perfect time to intervene with lifestyle changes that will provide a lifetime of healthier habits leading to healthy lives.

Children with a family history of high cholesterol and heart disease and overweight themselves are most at risk.

The scientific position of American Heart Association is "elevated cholesterol levels early in life may play a role in the development of adult atherosclerosis and that lowering levels in children and adolescents may be beneficial"

Children absorb their dietary cholesterol from food such as poultry, red meat, egg yolks, seafood and full cream dairy products like milk, cheese and ice cream

The following are some factors that come into play for kids with cholesterol problem:

- Diet that contains high level of saturated fats like baked goods and packaged snacks products.

A family history of high bad cholesterol to good cholesterol ratio.

- If they are overweight by medical standard and are have a sedentary life style.

- Children or teens who smokes, have high blood pressure or type 1 diabetes.

Should you have a child that is active, has a healthy diet that doesn't consist of eating an abundance of baked goods or snack items, and does not have a parental history of risky cholesterol levels and is not overweight; than you have little to worry about regarding cholesterol levels and early heart disease.

Children 2 years of age and older who have known risk factors for being at risk for cholesterol or heart disease contributing factors should be screened for cholesterol blood levels. These include :

Has at least one parent with a total cholesterol blood level of 240 mg/dL or higher

Has a parent or grandparent who has heart disease before 55.

- If there is any family history that is "unknown"

The child is overweight or is clinically obese

A simple blood test will tell your child's cholesterol level. At age 2-9, the acceptable level are less 170mg/dL. 170-199 mg/dL are considered borderline and high level are those that are above 200 mg/dL.
